Michelle Rose

The Boss

Michelle founded Custard and Bear in 2011; fulfilling a career long aim of bringing sensible, practical and creative marketing to businesses.

She is an accountant by qualification but who, much to her mum’s despair, left university to market caravans and motor-homes! This first role as a Marketing Assistant proved to Michelle that marketing was her passion and she never looked back.

Next followed a stint doing local government marketing for Gateshead Council. This was during the hugely exciting times of the opening of The Baltic and installation of the Gateshead Millennium Bridge. Michelle used to lead tours beneath the River Tyne to show how the Bridge worked, and if you wanted the Bridge tilted or lit in a different colour she was your girl!

After the sad death of her beloved Grandad Michelle left her ‘proper job’ to set up her own business. At only 24, and with a mortgage, everyone thought she was crazy; apart from her Grandad who has told her to go for it during one of their last conversations. This led to 5 years in the gift industry with two shops, The Gift Mobile and Kamari, and just the best time selling beautiful gifts to her amazing customers. This was retail pre-Facebook and Twitter days and when ecommerce was still a baby; so good old fashioned marketing and customer service was crucial to success.

Headhunted by Durham County Council, Michelle became a small business coach for their flagship Be Enterprising project. Over 4 years she helped over 150 small businesses start, many of them young entrepreneurs like herself. It was during this job that she missed marketing, and often found the marketing sections of her client’s business plans were rather chunky!

Faced with potential redundancy from Be Enterprising Michelle decided to take her redundancy and set up Custard and Bear. Her aim was to help businesses do awesome marketing. And, three years in, she is proud to be doing just that.

Kieran Rose

The Other Boss

Kieran is, quite simply, Michelle’s hero, rock and all round superstar.

He’s also a partner  in Custard and Bear and our social media genius. He just ‘gets’ how to engage on Twitter and Facebook in ways that our clients struggle with and that makes him pretty darn special.

Kieran has had a varied career and has been everything from a VAT Project Administrator at HMRC,  teaching assistant, gift shop manager, children’s centre co-ordinator and Forest Schools practitioner. What comes out of all of this is his ability to be super organised, deal with all types of people and get stuff done on time and on budget.

Kieran was the driving force behind The Gift Mobile and although the business was never officially his, he lived and breathed it with Michelle and learnt plenty about small business management along the way. And when everyone told Michelle she was crazy for starting a business at 24, Kieran told her to go for it and supported her every step of the way. It was also during The Gift Mobile days that he realised he loved working alongside Michelle, and once they sold the business and went back to ‘proper’ jobs, he began a stealthy and patient campaign to get them working together again.

This happened again in 2013; Kieran had taken on the role of full time dad to their two young boys whilst Michelle (then pregnant with Baby 3) worked to establish Custard and Bear. And steadily over a few months Kieran ‘helped’ Michelle by taking bits and bobs of work off her, until one day she realised he was actually running some client accounts and generally being amazing at marketing! And so, they decided to formally become business partners and share a business, a house, a social life and parenting of their 3 children. It’s a good job they get along so well!
